Introduction

Hi guys! I'm Salvador Ramirez, a conceptual artist in Mexico at Exodo Digital Workshop.

I just saw the amazing film UP! and the beautiful short film Partly Cloudy and almost burst into tears when I first saw the cloud characters of the second one (Fig.01 above). They were simply awesome! The render was just so nicely accomplished that I couldn't believe my eyes for almost half a minute ... so when I finally did, I thought to myself "I should figure out a way to at least render in Photoshop clouds like those!"

So this is what I came up with. It's pretty straight forward, so here goes:

Part 1

First of all, you obviously need to activate your brush tool (Fig.02).

Part 2

Go to your Brush Presets, open the "Brush Tip Shape" tab and select the "Spatter 59 pixels" brush (Fig.03).

Part 3

Go down in the same tab and increase the spacing to 58%.

Part 4

Open the "Scattering" Tab and change the values to: Scatter 121%, Count 6 and Count Jitter 7% (Fig.04).

Part 5

Open the "Dual Brush" tab and select "Soft Round 75", then change the values to: Diameter 35px, Spacing 57%, Scatter 117% and Count 1 (Fig.05).

Part 6

Now go to "Other Dynamics" tab and set Opacity Jitter to "Pen Pressure" (Fig.06).

Part 7

You need to work with Low-flow, so go to the options bar and set Opacity to 80% and flow to 41% (Fig.07).

Part 8

For the final render apply a "Gaussian blur" with a radius of around 8 (Fig.08 & Fig.09).

Part 9

Enjoy! (Fig.10).

Remember that the above values depend on the size of your canvas. You may have to adjust them a little to work with different sizes.
