Brazilian 3D illustrator Alexandre Raad impresses with his range of cool and interesting ZBrush and MODO creations, from Chewie to cartoon alligators – check out his interview...
3dtotal: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?
My name is Alexandre Raad and I'm a designer and 3D illustrator from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. I love working with 3D, especially with characters.
3dt: Where did you find the inspiration for your latest gallery entry? What's the story behind its creation?
I'm a big fan of Star Wars
Cartoon fan art was from a drawing I did in my sketchbook that became the inspiration to sculpt the character. I wanted to make a new interpretation of the character using ZBrush
. I did a few variations in design until I found a new concept.
3dt: What software and plug-ins did you use to create this image? Did you face any difficulties, and how did you overcome them?
I used MODO and ZBrush. The modeling process in ZBrush was very efficient. It was a great challenge to do the retopology and create the UV maps. I worked with UDIN within MODO to guarantee the best quality and resolution of displacement maps. I also used the native rendering of MODO. Typically, these are my usual software choices, along with Photoshop. A typical technique I use is 'box modeling', and I am currently studying the possibilities available with dynamesh.
3dt: What are your artistic ambitions? And what software would you like to learn in the future to expand your portfolio and skillset, and why?
My ambitions is to study and learn new techniques. This will expand the possibilities for each new job. In the future, I would like to learn how to use Clarisse FX
– I see great potential there.
3dt: How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?
I'm always working on personal projects. I publish the work on my site. I have a blog and I post on Instagram and also on Facebook. This helps to explore new techniques and keep my portfolio updated.
3dt: Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?
In traditional art there are two fantastic artists that I love; Greg Capullo and Simon Bisley. The digital sculptors who most influenced me are the Frederik Storm, Antropus and Neville Page. They are all brilliant!
