Character artist Martin Nikolov shares recent work from his portfolio and discusses his workflow...



3dtotal: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?
Martin Nikolov: Hi, my name is Martin and I am a character artist from Gabrovo, Bulgaria.

3dt: Where did you find the inspiration for your latest gallery entry? What's the story behind its creation?
MN: For my latest gallery entry, it was done for a client (ragingheres.com) so I tried to stick close to the provided concept.

3dt: What software and plug-ins did you use to create this image? Did you face any difficulties, and how did you overcome them?

MN: I used ZBrush for this project and some props were modeled in MODO. I don't use plugins right now. Since I really liked the concept for those job, there wasn't any difficulties actually.

3dt: Do you normally use this software in your workflow? What other software and plug-ins do you favor?
MN: Yep, most of the time I am starting directly in ZBrush, but it depends from the project. I am MODO user, with Marvelous Designer for cloth simulation.

3dt: Are there any particular techniques that you use often? Or do you like to experiment?
MN: For my personal stuff I like to start directly in ZBrush with a sphere and dynamesh – it's fun and gives you the freedom like you are sculpting with real clay. Not so much experimenting at this time, I am kind of conservative in that matter.

3dt: What software would you like to learn in the future to expand your portfolio and skillset, and why?
MN: I never use MARI, but I am planning to learn it in the next months. It supports huge maps, and I am planning to change the subject of my sculpts and to work on something really detailed!

3dt: How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?
MN: I don't think it's really up to date right now, but I am trying hard to catch up.

3dt: Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?
MN: Stanislaw Szukalski , Grzegorz Gwiazda, Cam de Leon and many many more!

3dt: What can we expect to see from you next?
MN: Pretty girls and lots of monsters of course!
