3D artist and board game miniaturist sculptor Carlos Garcia Zapata discusses the creation of his Ryu sculpt, and shares work from his portfolio...

3dtotal: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Carlos Garcia Zapata: I'm a digital sculptor located in a coastal city on the east of Spain. Most of the time I do miniatures for board games, and in my free time I try to do bigger things, detailing the miniatures in order to try to reach the statue level and drawing in order to keep the flow.

3dt: What software and plug-ins did you use to create this image? Did you face any difficulties, and how did you overcome them?

CGZ: Well, normally I use ZBrush and KeyShot, and for the Ryu Statue that wasn't different. These programs cover all the tools I need for my day to day work, but in the past I have also used 3ds Max with V-Ray, that means a good support in some cases.

3dt: Are there any particular techniques that you use often? Or do you like to experiment?

CGZ: I like to experiment a lot but I'm working most of the time. Because of that, I can't spend too much time trying things, so I have a solid pipeline for every project I work on. My workflow as digital sculptor is very easy; I try to get closer to the way classic sculptors worked. The silhouette and volumes are the first things I focus on, after that; I detail, then render and back to ZBrush for cuts and export to STL, and then the figure is ready for printing. In addition I use Dynamesh and Zremesher a lot, these tools let me work faster on the first steps.

3dt: What are your artistic ambitions?

CGZ: I would like to experience working on videogames or movies in the future, but for sure I also want to continue doing miniatures and statues for a long time. The jewelry industry has my attention too.

3dt: What software would you like to learn in the future to expand your portfolio and skillset, and why?

CGZ: I have in my mind for a long time the idea to learn Marvelous Designer for better clothing.

3dt: What can we expect to see from you next?

CGZ: In RN Estudio we have a big project cooking, a sci-fi based board game with a range of collectable miniatures of different races in the vast universe we have created. I will sculpt all of them and I'm really passionate about it.
