The approach of a new year has been encouraging us to get a little reflective, looking back at what the year 2013 had in store for us. Here, we round up some of the industry highlights and what went on at the 3dtotal HQ throughout 2013!

Like many of you, we found ourselves occupying cinema seats a LOT throughout 2013, feasting on all the incredible releases on the big screen. 2013 saw a zombie apocalypse in World War Z, the return of our favourite superhero in Man of Steel and some incredible stereo work in Gravity. Not to mention all of the charming animations we see on the 3dtotal homepage every day.

When we weren't at the cinema, we were most likely to be found tucked up at home watching an awesome TV series. 3dtotal was even lucky enough to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes feature on the production of /Spartacus: Vengeance and Spartacus: War of the Damned/ where we caught up with VFX Art Director Peter Baustaedter and Matte Painter Jean-Baptiste Verdier. You can read the full feature here.

2013 saw some epic game releases, including Grand Theft Auto 5, Tomb Raider, Injustice: Gods Among Us and The Last of Us to name a few. Games Radar named The Last of Us ‘Game of the year', concluding that the "final product is complete, cohesive, and affecting--it's the pinnacle of intelligent, powerful, artistically-minded gaming in the triple-A sphere.”

There were tons of advances in technology too, with 3D printing in your own home becoming more of a reality than ever. The most obvious tech rivalry was between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, both of which sold millions of consoles in a matter of weeks. Excited by all the cool stuff being launched left, right and center, we began a new series on the 3dtotal site called ‘Top Tech', where we check out the latest gadgets and technology coming out. On the lead up to Christmas, it also doubled up as a pretty handy shopping list for all those gadget heads out there too!

You can see the latest Top Tech here

Everyone was on their A game when it came to releasing new software in 2013. It felt like there was pretty much something new to get excited about every single week…

Autodesk 2014 Entertainment Creation Suite Released

The Foundry released NUKE 8

RealFlow 2013 Was Released

Lightwave released Chronosculpt

Houdini 13 was released

And then there was us! We had SO MUCH going on in 2013 and some really exciting projects that came to life. We released the first affordable anatomical figure, our Sketching from the imagination book sold out (twice!!) and our latest Kickstarter project, the Sketch Workshop made a jaw-dropping £86,824! Huge thanks to all of you that backed this project and helped make it such a massive success! You've made sure we're all kept super busy in 2014 delivering all your goodies, so thank you for your support.

There was lots more besides, but this should give you an idea of what we've been up to. We already have some great plans for 2014, including lots of new books, a female anatomy figure, not to mention the 100th issue of 2dartist magazine to name just a few. If you want to stay up-to-date on all our new releases, offers and what's on the site, make sure you sign up to our newsletter

Wishing you all very happy holidays and a great start to 2014!
