Milan-based 3D student Dario Bonito created the Cyber Demon Titan for a cyberpunk Unreal project – check out more images and his future plans...
3dtotal: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?
Dario Bonito: Hello everyone! My name is Dario Bonito, I'm 23 and I live in Milan, Italy. I am a 3D student at the European Design Institute (Istituto Europeo di Design, IED) and I feel honored by this interview, I would never have expected that! I've always been a 3D and VFX fan, and someday I'd like to develop my own game or give my contribution to the production of an important movie, I hope to get there, sooner or later!
3dt: What's the story behind your latest gallery entry? Where did the idea come from? What were you trying to achieve with it?
DB: During the first semester of the second year, I had to realize, in cooperation with four other guys, a tridimensional setting, completely explorable through Oculus Rift, by using the Unreal 4 gaming engine. We had the idea to create, in a Cyberpunk-style, a city district in the middle of a battle. The manga "Attack on Titan” inspired us, and taking my cue from the "Armored Titan”, I created my version, that is my "Cyber DEMON Titan”, a huge robotic giant that turned out to be even more successful than I had expected! If you are interested in the project video, you can check it out below:
3dt: What software and plug-ins did you use to create this image? Did you face any difficulties, and how did you overcome them?
DB: I modeled my "Cyber Demon Titan” in 3ds Max, textured via Substance Painter and rendered with KeyShot! As regards the hard surface, I've always found myself pretty successful here, and that's why I completed the modeling phase of the most important mechanical models by myself! It took me about two weeks, modeling at night, while during the day I was busy with school!
3dt: What are your artistic ambitions?
DB: I'd really like to work in the gaming or in the VFX industry, but at the moment I'm still a student. I still have a long way to go and a lot to learn! I am glad to have the opportunity to appear on the 3dtotal pages, it's a great achievement for me!
3dt: Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?
DB: I have so many favorite artists to get inspired by! To me they are such incredible awesome geniuses! In the 3D field, the first one that comes to my mind is definitely Alessandro Baldasseroni, a fellow countryman. I hope someday I'll be as good as he is!
I also follow many 2D artists by whom I often get inspired. Among my favorite ones are Rock D, Luis Figueiredo, Ching Yeh, Andrey Terentev, Xiaoyu Wang and Mole Wang.
3dt: What can we expect to see from you next?
DB: Right now, I'm focused on completing two exam projects! The first assignment is about the creation of a hyper-real character with ZBrush! The second one is about a compositing exercise to carry out through Nuke; I have to integrate an animated robot into a real context, I hope everything will go well! Next year will be my final year at IED, and I will have to develop my thesis project, I can't wait! Follow me on my ArtStation or on Facebook if you're curious to see what I'm going to realize!
