'ZBrush'

Making of 'Satyr Statue'

Post-Production in Photoshop:

To finish this guy I used Photoshop CS5 with a plugin called Magic Bullet Looks Builder from Red Giant, which is an amazing tool that allows you to create photo-real effects, like chromatic aberrations, grain, diffusion, and so on.

Before using the plugin I applied the depth of field using my ZDepth pass and the Lens Blur filter. I also did some levels adjustments and cropped the image to get a better balance on composition (Fig.31).

Here you can see the filters that I used to create the final look (Fig.32)

It’s hard to explain in depth what each filter does, but here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Crush – tints the image with some color
  • Diffusion – the subtle glow/flare that you see in the image
  • Chromatic Aberration – this is a lens effects; it happens where the light is strong on the surface (can you see the subtle red line around his horns?)
  • Vignette – a subtle dark color on the corners of the image
  • Edge Softness – blurriness on the corners
  • Deflare – I used it as a controller to the glow/flare effects.

One thing that you have to keep in mind is that you should more “feel” these effects then really “see” them on the final image. Sometimes less is more!

Okay that’s it. As a final touch I just used an Unsharp mask to get a bit more focus in some areas of the image… and here is the final shot for the entire figure (Fig.33 – 34)

Hi, my name is Jonas Skoog, a 3D character artist living in Stockholm, Sweden. I loved manga and anime when
I was younger and Dragon Ball Z was one of my favorite series. It therefore felt natural to pay tribute to my
