An interesting way to model the big "arms" of the fairground ride was to use a line to give the basic shape, while a circle gave the volume, and Create > Geometry > Compound Objects > Loft > Deformation > Scale gave the fade-in and fade-out effect to the shape (Fig.09).

For the neon lights around the column I found a curious way to adjust them - with a Spring and Displace modifier! For the map slot I used a gradient ramp map to simulate the column curves.
