Creating detailed 3D models with Code-Artist's AutoModeller Pro for 3ds Max

AutoModeller Pro is a new plugin for Autodesk 3ds Max that allows you to texture your 3D meshes with 'geometry textures' - take a closer look...

AutoModeller Pro is a brand new incredibly advanced, game-changing plugin for 3ds Max that allows you to apply or paint a group of meshes as "geometry-texture" onto your existing scene geometry. This is similar to displacement mapping; you can control tiling, positioning and so on using UV mapping, just as you would with a regular 2D texture.

Interactive workflow

In this example you can see a brick wall geometry texture being applied to a box using a UVW map modifier. As you move, scale and even rotate the gizmo of the modifier, the results are automatically updated by the software. Also observe how the meshes are being conformed to fit to the borders:

Powerful painting functionality

One of the most important features of AutoModeller Pro is the integrated painting functionality. This allows you to paint geometry textures on any object in the scene with a simple brushstroke. The objects are distributed on the surface according to the UV-mapping of the target object.

Combine multiple geometry textures

Using a very powerful "replacement-brush" tool, which works similar to a 'clone brush' and lets you paint on any object in the scene, you can combine multiple geometry textures. In this case the meshes are being conformed (or sliced and capped) at the borders automatically. Alternatively they can also be set to overlap, or scaled to fit to the borders during painting on a per-object basis.

Curved surface deformation

You can also apply/paint geometry textures onto curved surfaces, which can be very useful when you want to create a tower or a similar structure. The vertices are deformed to fit to the round surface of the cylinder. The stones have been modelled with a 2D stone texture as reference. This 2D reference stone texture is applied to the cylinder so you can see that the individual stones end up in the place where their 2D counterparts are.

Integrated stairs-brush and randomize functionality

Using the integrated stairs brush you can quickly create stairs. Also, you can activate the randomizer which is very useful to quickly add some more variation to the individual objects. Each object you paint can be adjusted by individual paint settings (randomization amount, stairs brush, border slice options and so on) during the painting process. If you paint over an already painted object its settings will be adjusted or replaced if the object belongs to another geometry texture.

Interactively change base mesh geometry

Whenever you change the geometry or UV mapping of the target object, or if you change the arrangement of objects in your 'geometry texture', AutoModeller Pro will automatically regenerate the results, which is useful when you want to make subtle changes.

Instances, proxies & multi-threaded attach-mode

For those of you who like to build massive 3D scenes, AutoModeller Pro supports both instances, proxy meshes and even comes with a multi-threaded attach-mode, which attaches all objects to one mesh, so that you can turn it into a proxy. This can then be used by AutoModeller to create even more detailed scenes.

Paint entire cityscapes

AutoModeller Pro can be used for anything, whether it is sci-fi or fantasy scenes, nature or modern architecture. Using AutoModeller you can quickly create huge scenes just by painting over some low poly models in your scene, and combining different sorts of patterns to get your desired look and feel.
