Then I approach the lighting. I set the dodge tool's range to "Highlights" and chose a soft brush. With these settings I start to dodge the spots on the animal that are especially round (Fig.04).

Afterwards a new layer is created and the layer with the base tone is masked so that I don't paint over it. With a soft brush I paint the shadows. When that is done, it's off to the final touch. On the shadow-layer, using the Smudge tool (hard brush, 50-70%), I "smear" colour into the folds and creases, e.g. around the ears, on the belly and in the face (Fig.05).
