Brush Technique: Blending

In traditional and digital painting alike, blending from one area of color to the adjacent area of color is fundamental. This video shows a simple and controlled way to transition, or "blend", paint on the Photoshop canvas.

Great tutorial! A couple of questions though, is there a reason you create new layers rather than blend all on the one layer? And could I ask what texture you are using on your brush? Thanks :D
