3D Total Interviews

.
An interview with Christopher Mullins

3DTotal - It looks like there was a lot of love that went into the making of Blue, did you at any point have any doubt’s towards it?
Chris - Of course! The whole project took about 2.5 years to complete. After about 6 months I started thinking to myself… “Uh oh… what have you done?!”

3DTotal - What was your favorite part of making Blue?
Chris
- The animation, modeling, lighting and rendering were all exciting things to work on, and each had its own reward, but in all honesty, the most powerful moments of production were watching fully rendered scenes with sound effects and music for the first time. It’s hard to describe exactly why that was my favorite part, but I suppose it’s because that’s the point where it becomes official; I had created life… in a manner of speaking.

3DTotal - Did you think it would win as many awards as it has?

Chris - Absolutely not. I’m still surprised at all of the recognition and opportunities that Blue has brought to my doorstep

3DTotal - What have you learnt from it?
Chris - As a first film, I’m very happy with the way Blue turned out, but am in no way satisfied as a filmmaker. I suppose that overall, filmmaking is much harder than I expected. There are so many aspects to telling a story on the screen that it’s no wonder people need large teams to truly pull it off. I’m still very much a part of the artists out there who wish to use today’s technology to push the abilities of small teams, but in the end, filmmaking is a job for the heart and the mind and I hope that one day, when I’m an old man, I can look back on my creations and feel a true sense of growth and accomplishment, otherwise it wouldn’t be worth doing.

3DTotal - And if anyone is thinking of making there own short movie, what advice would you give them?
Chris - Make it shorter than Blue! Seriously… Blue is impressive to artists because it’s so long and detailed and it required a lot of patience just to finish, but future employers and film festivals prefer short, high quality work.

3DTotal - How do you see your work developing in the future?
Chris - Right now I have a full time job as Animation Technical Director for Fathom Studios that takes up 80-90% of my time. I am struggling to stay on track with my new short, but it’s very difficult. Not to mention having a regular life to live. Making shorts has really become a love for me and I hope to continue developing skills as a filmmaker, but quality is more important than quantity to me, so I’m taking my sweet time.
