3DTotal: Hi Jessy. Can you let our readers know where you are currently based and working and briefly how you found your way here?
Jessy: I’m currently based near Montreal in a town named Two-Mountains. After working on movies such as Sin City, Sky Captain, Silent Hill and the video games Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones and Assassin, I gained some good knowledge of the movie and video game industries. I saw the increasing interest in those fields and the need for excellent talent and decided to co-found, with Alpha-Vision, an |

environment studio named Meduzarts. In parallel to my duties as Meduzarts’ Creative Director, I’m also Alpha-Vision’s Artistic Director. Even though my days are quite busy, filled with Excel forms and other exciting paperwork, I still find the time to do some of the matte painting myself, which helps me not to lose touch with the brush. And to fill in my few hours of freedom from work, I also teach matte painting at the National Animation and Design Center (NAD).

good day to day variety, can you tell us a little more about the NAD centre?
Jessy: The National Animation and Design centre is a well known 3D school based in Montreal. Many of its students are now working in diverse VFX companies all around the world and working on major feature films. Myself being an old student of this school, I’m having a really great time teaching there. I focus my class on how to do some 2D/3D matte painting using different techniques like camera projections. |

3DTotal: Can you tell us more about Meduzarts?
Jessy: Meduzarts is really my dream come true. Its mission is to provide a solution for VFX studios in need of an expertise in 3D environments and matte painting. Given that we have a close relationship with Alpha-Vision, we were able to grow quickly and become a primary partner for several VFX studios. We are now a team of over 80 employees and we work on productions such as the movie 300 and the Discovery mini-series Race to |

3DTotal: You initially graduated in fine art and then moved onto a digital course, is this a path you recommend to others and how easy did you find the traditional/digital transition?
Jessy: I recommend having a fine art course because 3D and 2D softwares are only tools that help you, they don’t do all the work for you. You will learn in fine art things like: compositions, dynamism of lightning, perspective - |

things you won’t necessarily learn in a 3d program. The transition between traditional arts and digital art is quit easy. You very quickly learn the benefits of the undo button :)
3DTotal: Of all the projects you have worked on, which was your favourite and why?
Jessy: One of my favourite projects was to participate in the matte painting on the feature film “La Grande Séduction”. The challenge was to recreate a photo realistic fishing town. Because the director wanted a huge camera movement I had to do the entire town in 3d. This project was my first fully 3d matte painting. |
