3DTotal: What is it about oriental painting that interests you particularly?
Jean-Francoi: Purity. This is the word I feel when I see Japanese estamps; purity of line, tone and subject matter. They are so intense and so strong. All is clear, and I really feel something strong when I’m in front of an estamp. They don’t need to use tricks or Fx, they show the essence of life with their simple lines. This is what a real painting is for me, and this is the most difficult thing to do: simple lines that show everything.
3DTotal: It is easy to see an oriental influence in your work in terms of the compositions and imagery, but you also mention Turner on your website as an influence. What significance does he hold in relation to your work?
Jean-Francoi: I really like the work on the lights and textures that he put into his paintings. His paintings are pure energy, strength and freedom. |

When I see his works, I feel the rage, the life, the pain - so many emotions. He said something on his canvas and this is what I like with painters like Van Gogh, Degas, and a lot of other artists. They painted not only what they saw, but what they felt; the life, the air, everything, and not just visuals. This is something I want to achieve. I hate, or I should say I’m not interested with, hyper realistic renders in either art, games, or anything I see. What I seek is originality, humanity and I want to see the real work of a real man, and not just a machine-like reproduction.
3DTotal: Which is your favourite Kurosawa film?
Jean-Francoi: I like all of them so much, but if I have to name one, I think that Ran is my favourite. The story, the pictures, all are fantastic in this film. I really feel that Kurosawa is a real painter in this film. |

3DTotal: What would you say are the advantages and disadvantages of working as a freelance artist?
Jean-Francoi: Firstly, the disadvantages are finding contracts and the administrative part of the freelancer’s job. Everything else is great for me! I work at home and can almost do what I want in the creative process. The companies I’m working with almost let me have “carte blanche” each time, so it is really motivating to work like this. Every day is creative, and even when I don’t have a contract, I discover something new with my art. Yes, freelance is great for me. |

3DTotal: Are there any particular areas of the CG industry that you are yet to work in which interest you?
Jean-Francoi: Actually no. I find so much fun with my actual work and projects so I don’t want to do something else. I have so much to learn with my drawing and painting so I have actually little time to try to learn another medium. But I’m really interested in all the new techniques that appear now. It is so amazing what progress can be seen in the CG universe. |
