3DTotal: So with this opportunity, do you think you will grow as an artist?
Emrah: Yes, of course. As an artist in the game industry, I’m also trying to learn about how these
games are really coming to life. Not only from the art side. Also from the management and production side. Pushing my boundaries and working on challenging projects are always fun. You really feel that you’re creating something. When I was working as a. freelance artist, I didn’t feel like that because I wasn’t a part of that team I was working for. Being in the team and working with your
colleagues is really something else.. |

3DTotal: With the increasing number of digital artist around today, as well as the number of good community forums where artist can learn and be helped, do you think most modern artist are forgetting about the roots of art and the Masters or is this just the general progression of the industry?
Emrah: I don’t think that a real artist would forget about the masters and the roots of art. Even in my day job, I always get inspiration from the old masters. It’s true that new age artists get stuck in the digital medium and forget the smell of real paint. But everything still remains same except the medium. Today’s industry is a bit ungrateful and artists need to produce lots of artwork in a short amount of time. I don’t b elieve that any artist, who does not know anything about masters and their work, can possibly create inspirational works. It really shows when you look at the artwork itself.

3DTotal: Well it has been a pleasure talking with yourself and I wish you all the best at Lionhead.
One last question before we wrap things up. What has been the most influential bit of advice
that you have been given in your art career so far?
Emrah: Hmm, it’s hard to tell actually but it was when I was attending a workshop in Amsterdam organized by conceptart.org years ago. I was a student and anxious to learn anything from industry professionals. I showed my crappy portfolio to Kevin Llwellyn and he suddenly asked that
“What is this?” I said “Ermm, my sketches”. Actually he was talking about my presentation. My sketches were in a cheap dossier and he told me that “Never put your art in something like this. It’s not only the quality of your art; it’s how you present it”. Well, it was a big advice for a student like me. I’ve never underestimated my own work after that speech. |
