An interview with Carlos Fernadez Puertolas

3DTotal - There are many 3D artists out there wanting to create their own short - what advice would you give them?
Carlos
- First of all it's really important
to have in your mind your limitations, there
are so many people that start to make short
films with about 19 characters and 24 environments
that dont have the required resources and
skills and obviously the result can be catastrophic,
if there is any result at all. It's important
to know clearly what you can do and what is
inside your possibilities. Also it's very
important to know clearly what you want to
do and have the general concept before you
begin, and never lose hope and confidence
in the project, there are always some phases,
mainly at the end,

where you feel like everything is wrong, but you have to cheer up and keep going! Lastly it is very important to read, study and learn from what you see. Animation films, normal films and even people. You can find inspiration for ideas from everywhere, the important thing is to take all of these little pieces and create your own style |

3DTotal - What would be your ideal job and what would be your job title?
Carlos - I am working in a videogame
company in the UK, but I'm always open to freelance
jobs and offers.
My ideal job would be as an animator in feature
films, doesn't matter what studio, I just want
a nice project surrounded by good animators
were you can absorb knowledge and improve, I
think the animation industry is based on that

3DTotal - Who are your favourite artists or animators? Who inspires you?
Carlos
- I admire lots of animators I could start to
name them and I wouldn't stop until tomorrow
J Carlos Baena, Mark Behm, Shawn Kelly, Victor
Navone, Bobby Beck, Mark C. Harris, Cameron
Miyasaki, & hellip; Some of these animators
are brilliant not only because they animate
incredibly well but also they like to share
their knowledge, and that's a really important
thing to me and inspires me.
And who inspires me? I find inspiration from
lots of places, from music and big film studios
like Pixar, Dreamworks, Blue sky, etc to independent
shorts and comics. I think the inspiration can
come from a lot of sources, for example, in
the case of my last short film, Bath Time, the
inspiration came from my tiny dog, china, and
his fear of the water. |

3DTotal - What's your favourite piece of CG animation?
Carlos - I don't think
I have just one favourite, but classics like
S.O.S; from Cameron Miyasaki
Or For the Birds from Pixar, there are so
many films that I love so its impossible for
me to choose just one
3DTotal - What are your plans for the future?
Carlos - At this moment I would like to keep learning, improving and trying to do better and more interesting things every day, and who knows maybe in a near future to can find a job as an animator in a big company and start to animate in films, that will be brilliant!
