'Making of Jeep® Willys MB'
by Mhd. Rasyid Ridha a.k.a Xtreme™

Introduction:

Hello, my name is Muhammad Rasyid Ridha and I'm from Indonesia.  In this article, I will show the general making of this image.  First of all, as for any project that I start, I collected as much reference material as I needed.  I like a variety of Jeeps, including military ones.  After looking at so many of them I chose to work on a U.S Military Jeep, post World War II, and the model I decided on was the Jeep® Willys MB Officer.  For the colour scheme, I was inspired by the movie “Saving Private Ryan”.  All that you see here in this art work has been thought up and created by myself; however, what I'm trying to show in this Making Of may not be the best method of reaching the same outcome.

In this Making Of my Jeep® Willys MB, there are five sections: modelling, texturing, lighting and rendering, compositing, and post production.  As for the application itself, I used four software packages, which were Softimage XSI, Body Paint, Photoshop and HDR Shop.  Some of textures I used were also from 3DTotal’s Texture Collections (http://www.3dtotal.com/textures).

Modelling:

For this part I used Softimage XSI and started from a simple primitive polymesh (Fig.01a - b).

Once I was happy with the basic form, I simply added the details, detached meshes, subdivided and so on.  Towards the end of the modelling phase I was cleaning up the meshes and removing any unnecessary edges/meshes, and so on (Fig.01c-f ).  I used the same modelling technique for all of the other parts.
