3DTotal:
Hi Ani, are you a freelancer or are you employed? What does a typical day in France involve for you?
Mathieu: Hello. I’ve been a freelancer since 2002. I first worked for Lankhor, developing video games for PC and Playstation, then, when the company closed down, I became a freelancer in order to become a full-time Illustrator. A typical day begins about 2 o’clock in the afternoon; I shoot myself with café-pizza, and I draw, draw, and draw - from time to time my mouse skids on the Diablo2 icon (quite compatible with Painter 9; you’d better think about recording the current drawing before skidding though!), or when my finger pushes the Gamecube pad. In the evening, I socialise a little, before going back to work and diving finally, around 6 o’clock in the morning, into a well-deserved coma!

3DTotal: It sounds like you are becoming nocturnal! Do you find you work better during the very late hours?
Mathieu: It’s true, I tend to live more and more at night now. I don’t really know why... Probably because it’s quieter for drawing; there are fewer temptations from outside, and I feel that the ideas come more easily to me.

3DTotal: You seem to have developed a great style of your own. Has this come naturally to you over the years?
Mathieu: I don’t really know if I’ve developed a style of my own, yet. Nevertheless, I think that it came over the years, from various orders and personal projects. I think I’ve learnt a lot simply by observing what’s around me and the work of others. I spend quite a lot of time on the Internet, wandering about the forums devoted to CG, being astounded by the images that I see. It’s what impels you to go further; realising it’s high time to take the bull by the horns again, since there’s so much improvement to be done in this technical field.
3DTotal: Yes it’s amazing how much you can learn just by surfing around online. Which are your favourite sites?
Mathieu: I most often spend time on the forums, which gives the opportunity to see new and varied things every time the page refreshes. The forum I visit most frequently is that of Café Salé (www.cfsl.net), because it has the huge advantage of being French-speaking, and because a lot of talented people go there. I also frequently visit the forum of ConceptArt.org - there’s always a lot of marvellous things to discover there. I don’t participate in it though because of the language which is a slight problem for me. Sometimes I go on Eatpoo too, again for the quality of the works on display. Besides that, I visit a lot of personal websites and blogs by switching from link to link.
