3DTotal:
Hello Emrah, could tell us a about yourself and how you first started out doing 2d?

Emrah: I’m a Turkish Concept Artist based in London, UK. I’m working at Lionhead Studios as a full-time

concept artist. Before coming to UK, I was a freelance artist living in Turkey and I was working for various clients like Crystal Dynamics, Irrational Games, Cgtoolkit and Fantasy Flight Games as well as the ad agencies in Istanbul like Mccann Erickson and Euro RSCG. I was trying very hard to get a full-time job in Games Industry. There aren’t many video game companies in Istanbul, actually there’s no video game industry at all. I was really bored of drawing storyboards and concept boards, so I started to send out my portfolio to various video game companies and luckily I received a job offer from Digi-Guys. Which was great for me. I worked on a PS3 game there and had great moments and met some very talented artists. Then because of personal reasons I switched to Lionhead Studios to work on a fresh Xbox 360 game. Exciting stuff…

How I first started doing 2d? hmm. Well…it was on my University days. I was drawing since my childhood but I wasn’t sure about what I’m going to do with this skill. Then I discovered concept design and digital media afterwards. I’m a Fine Arts faculty graduate, but I can say that I mostly learned how to draw and paint by myself. You know the rest, working hard and believing in yourself…

3DTotal: How would you best describe your style or artwork?
Emrah: Actually I’m still trying to develop a style but I can say that I have a more painterly style which I like a lot. I prefer to get quick results in my work so most of my works are quite sketchy. I sometimes polish my pieces and go into detail for commissioned works but it doesn’t happen really often.

3DTotal: Lionhead Studios are famous for producing the “Black and White” and more recently “Fable”. You’re currently working as a senior concept artist there, so could you tell us what sort of things that you have been currently working on?
Emrah: I can’t really tell a lot about the game I’m working on right now. It’s not announced yet and it’s confidential. It’s a very challenging project for me because I’m trying to adapt my skills to an entirely diff erent style and world. I’m creating most of the concepts on the project, so it’s quite a responsibility. The Fable guys are also doing great. You can check Lionhead’s website and see the updates on the game and dive into the community. www.lionhead.com

3DTotal: Can you give us some indication of what a normal day entails for you?
Emrah: Well, a normal day for me should be a very creative and a productive day. I try to draw everyday before and after work. Freshness of the mornings and exhaustion of evenings are pretty diff erent from each other and I can come up with really diff erent ideas while drawing in my sketchbook. Even when I’m tired or fresh, I always need to draw. That’s how a day would possibly be normal for me :)

3DTotal: So how does working at Lionhead compare, work wise, to Digi Guys?
Emrah: Well, they are quite diff erent from each other. Digi-Guys are a small artist oriented studio and Lionhead is a large studio owned by Microsoft. I

liked working in Digi-Guys and I met some great artists there. The project was fun too but in Lionhead I have a chance to learn how stuff really goes in game business. The most important thing is to enjoy
what you’re doing in your day job. I’m quite happy there and drawing everyday. This was what I want
when I first decided to do this as a career.
