3dtotal: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Sofian Moumene: Hello, my name is Sofian Moumene and I'm a 3D illustrator currently employed at Carioca Studio based in Bucharest, Romania.

3dt: Tell us the story behind your artwork: What brought you into the digital art world and what software do you use?

SM: I fell in love with 3ds Max and computer arts during my high-school years and since then I can't get enough. I began to learn everything about 3D art and I wanted to know every aspect of it, but I soon realized that I had to specialize in something, and so I settled on still 3D illustrations. I often experiment with other branches of the CG world such as animation and motion graphics.

3dt: How did you learn to paint digitally?

SM: I started to learn 3ds Max because the moment I opened it for the very first time, I realized that it was the perfect tool for materializing anything you can imagine. First it was a tough and frustrating process because I had to learn alone (there weren't any video tutorials at that time and I didn't own an internet connection) so I had to go at an internet cafe and search for written tutorials on anything related to 3ds Max, then copy them onto floppy disks and get every bit of valuable information out of them later at home. Now I realize that it was a fun period of time where I didn't care about the effort I had to put in back then.

3dt: How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

SM: I don't think it's about trying to keep it up to date for me it is more important to have high-quality works, even if you update it very rarely. A portfolio must be as visible as possible and for that you have to be as active as possible in the CG community and try to get help, and of course give it when you can.

3dt: Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

SM: I like the works of Marek Denko. I love his sensibility when lighting his scenes. He has a special way in which he understands light.

3dt: What software would you like to learn in the future to expand your portfolio and skillset, and why?

SM: I would like to learn every software because you can always find something useful, but I know this is not possible, so I would first like to learn MODO because it has more advanced modeling tools in comparison to 3ds Max.

3dt: How do you like to unwind after a hard day's (or night's) work?

SM: Sometimes I like to meet my friends in a bar and have a drink until the late hours, even if I know the first part of the next day will be very painful!

Sometimes I'll meet my friends at their home and plan the future or play board games. Just recently we bought a 3D printer and this is taking up most of our time recently.

3dt: If you could choose any superhero power, what would you take, and why?

SM: I would like a Green Lantern-like ring because it does anything that you think of, so your mind is the only limit...
