When applying multiple materials (mat IDs) to an object, you simply set different Mat.IDs for each polygon and by doing that, you get a sharp transition between these materials. But what if you don't want that? What if you want a smooth transition between your materials?
That's what I am going to show you in this tutorial: how to paint multiple materials with Vertex Paint.

Then put the vertex color in the mask channel of the composite map.

But, there may be a solution. I have never tried it, so I'm not 100% sure, it will work: You could assign displacement map to each material individually.
