Making of 'Om Shri Ganesha'
The talented 3D artist Ongie Ongushi shares with us his creative process for the latest adorable 3D cartoon
Ganesha is coming! For me, Ganesha is a pillar for success in art, love, work, and richness. I have spent a lot of time on this project and there were many interruptions during my work process, but I believed that I could do it and now I have finally finished this piece. I like to think of it as my "Dream come true project". Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah is the mantra for success, victory, prosperity, knowledge and illumination.
Sketch
Ganesha is one of the best known of the Hindu deities and is portrayed in 32 different forms. I chose to use his 22nd form, known as "Ekadanta Ganesha", because it is especially meaningful to me and I also find it very encouraging.
Model
Although this model looks very simple, it actually contains a lot of smaller bits which all are deeply detailed, especially his crown and the arch in the background. Therefore, I spent quite a bit of time on this stage.
Texture
The body of Ganesha has very simple textures compared to his jewelry, but none of the textures were easy on this work, especially blending the gold. I spent a long time researching and looking for the right information to get the desired material and effects.
Scene Texture
Texturing the scene called for a lot of effort because it was all new to me, it gave me a sore wrist! Texturing the laddu (ball-shaped sweets) was also a bit of a challenge because I have never made anything like this before. Again, I did lots of research because I wanted the textures to look right. The rat is often portrayed with Ganesha as his attendant and he dares not eat the laddu without the permission.
Texture rechecking
I used only one Vray Light to recheck all textures, superficially it looks fine but I did need to do some adjusting.
Displacement texture on the pillar
I don't use the VRay Displacement Mod very often but it was very useful creating the pattern on the arch, and I think the results look fantastic!
Cloth and axe texture
Once again I worked very hard on this step. I created many Hindu patterns to get the right look but it was definitely worth the effort because it gives the piece that extra level of authenticity.
Lighting and rendering
There were many lights need for this scene, even though it is only small. I used a combination of one Vray Sun (which is the main light source), five Vray lights, and two Omni lights, for the candlelight to add a little extra to the scene. I like to keep a log of my rendering, which I find helpful when I am trying to improve my timing and quality.
Retouch
Adding the candlelight helps to give the scene another level of interest, however I wanted more control over the effect of the candlelight. To do this I used Overlay and Photoshop, I am very happy with the results.
