Allegorithmic's Substance Painter: An introduction

Substance Painter is a real-time 3D painting and texture creation application that allows you to create a variety of texture maps for use in game and presentational engines. The application allows you to paint real-time on an imported mesh akin to Polypainting in ZBrush, but with the added power of painting each material channel such as Albedo, Roughness, and Metallic maps, at the same time, in a non-destructive fashion.

It also has unique features such as particle brushes, pre-made physical-based materials and the ability to use Substance Packages, created in Substance Designer, to add dynamic surface effects to a mesh in real-time, while updating each individual texture map.

Substance Painter is still currently in beta but it has been enhanced with new features and tools through regular updates over the past few months and is now extremely stable.

It can also be used as a standalone application to create accurate, physical-based texture maps, but when combining this application with Substance Designer, you can use the power of both Substance packages, while adding an artistic flair back into the procedural workflow.
