Making Of 'Sky Lounge'

Hello there and welcome to my Making Of Sky Lounge. Like always I used 3ds Max 2012 and V-Ray 2.0 to create this image, along with some plugins like Floor Generator and Multiscatter.

First of all I started by setting up Max's internal unit system, changing it to meters and centimeters to have a correct scaling (Fig.01).

After that I set up the Gamma Correction to 2.2. This setting worked well for me, but there are several different settings that you'll see people recommend on the web, so stick with the one that works fine with you (Fig.02).

I started by using simple box modeling to create my lounge, inspired by some images from Ronen Bekermans' website: http://www.ronenbekerman.com/. I modeled the sky lounge from existing images and tried to get as close as I could to my references (Fig.03 - 04).

I needed lots of big windows and doors to get lots of nice evening light inside my lounge, so I opened my model on two sides and built big windows from top to bottom (Fig.05).

The next step was to fill the lounge with interiour furniture and a nice kitchen. I am not the greatest modeler so I grabbed models from Designconnected and Turbosquid (Fig.06).

A special part of the interior was the floor. It was made with the famous Floor Generator plugin from CGSource.com, which is a great tool for generating random-looking wooden floors (Fig.07).

The multi material that comes with this plugin is great at generating different effects on the floor in the color you want. So just give it a try and play with the settings. There is not much to say about it because it is just easy to use. Here are my settings for the floor (Fig.08 - 09). I used the same multi texture for the Reflection, Glossiness and Bump.

The outside plants are just one bamboo-like V-Ray proxy that I scattered with the Multiscatter plugin from rendering.ru. Here are the settings I used (Fig.10).

Next I set the lightning. I used the V-Ray internal Sun/Sky system, which works just great for this kind of image. Also I used a V-Ray dome light to get the light that I wanted. So, in fact, I just used the V-Ray Sky for the reflections in my scene, as seen in the settings in (Fig.11 - 12).

The render settings are nothing special. I used IR map and light cache for the GI, and the adaptive DMC for the image sampler (Fig.13).

The Image sampler is an adaptive DMC with 1/24 and an Area filter to get a smoother look (Fig.14 - 16).
