THU/2014 announces a venue in paradise

One hour from Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, lies the peninsula of Troia, a stunning strip of white sand that puts a world of history at your feet. Announced as the location for Trojan Horse was a Unicorn 2014 (THU/2014) between 17 and 20 September, Troia boasts a beautiful marina, casino, restaurants, swimming pools and generous helpings of sunshine, making it something of a paradise location for THU/2014 attendees.

THU/2014 will take place at the Troia Design Hotel, a grand and contemporary five-star resort with incredible views of the sea. Featuring internal spaces that coexist naturally and alongside its surrounding environment, the venue is set to create a utopia where THU/2014 attendees will have opportunity to see, meet and learn from some of the biggest names in the CG and digital arts industries.

Speakers already confirmed include: industry legend Syd Mead, best known for his concept designs for the epic sci-fi movies Blade Runner, Aliens and TRON; multi-award-winning visual effects supervisor Robert Legato, praised for his VFX work on Titanic and Apollo 13; Oscar winner Andrew Jones, hailed for his work on Titanic, Avatar and World War Z; and Scott Ross, the digital media executive who ran George Lucas' companies and founded, along with James Cameron and Stan Winston, Digital Domain, one of the largest digital production studios in the world.

These four legends head an all-star line-up of artist speakers, including: Christian Alzmann, Carlos Baena, Alessandro Baldasseroni, Gavriil Afanasyev Klimov, Michael Kutsche, Jeremy Mann, Ben Mauro, Kyle McCulloch, Ian McQue, Catherine Mullan, Karla Ortiz, Rebeca Puebla, Matthias Verhasselt and Denis Zilber. To add to the talent even further still, THU/2014 also welcomes a wealth of mentors that will offer informal group mentorships to attendees. Mentors include the top industry talents: Jose Alves da Silva, Tiago Hoisel, Serge Birault, Pedro Conti, Victor Hugo, In-Ah Roediger, Afonso Salcedo, Jana Schirmer, Andrew Schmidt, Marc Simonetti and Loïc Zimmermann.

“Following last year’s event, we received feedback from attendees telling us that THU had literally changed their lives,” said THU founder and organiser, Andre Luis. “This was so motivating and gave us even more driving force to deliver a panel of speakers, legends, mentors, workshops tutors and more to do all that again this year – but with even more on top!”

Also announced is the participation of a world leader in VFX training: Gnomon School of Visual Effects. Two instructors will be heading over to Portugal to lead hands-on workshops for THU/2014 attendees: Devon Fay will present a workshop on the challenges of creating environments for entertainment; meanwhile Louie Tucci will showcase digital sculpting basics in ZBrush, focusing on helping newcomers. These not-to-be-missed lectures are offered in addition to yet another hands-on workshop by the master sculptor, Alex Oliver, an instructor at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art.
