Introduction
With the Trojan Horse was a Unicorn festival almost upon us, we chat to the winner of the Golden Ticket, who will be heading over to Portugal in September to rub shoulders with top artists from the industry, including Loic Zimmermann, Serge Birault, Pixar experts, pros from Sony Pictures Imageworks and Platige, and many, many more!
The Trojan Horse was a Unicorn CG Challenge was set up as an opportunity for artists to showcase their talents to some of the biggest names in the VFX, animation and games industries, while pitching for the chance to win a Golden Ticket to the event.
"The winner of this prestigious prize gets 4-day access to the Trojan Horse was a Unicorn festival, complete with lodging expenses"
But what is the Golden Ticket, you might ask? The winner of this prestigious prize gets 4-day access to the Trojan Horse was a Unicorn festival, complete with lodging expenses. To win, artists had to enter the 'Friend or Foe' CG Challenge, to digitally create a new character that can be associated with the Trojan Horse was a Unicorn mascot. Think a sidekick, like Robin is to Batman, or a villain, like Darth Vader!
The Trojan Horse was a Unicorn VFX Festival mascot concept was created by Serge Birault; Jose Alves da Silva was then responsible for creating the 3D version you see here
The judging panel consisted of an impressive line-up of talent, including Afonso Salcedo, Jose Alves da Silva, Loic Zimmerman, Serge Birault and Nuno Rivotti. You can see the quality of submissions over on the THU CG Challenge Facebook Group.
We talk to the winner of the Golden Ticket to find out what he's most excited about now the festival is almost here...
Can you tell us a little about you and your interests in the CG industry?
My name is Dor Shamir, currently residing in Paris, France, and originally from Tel-Aviv, Israel. I have been drawing since I can remember. My parents enrolled me into an art school in first grade, where I first saw a Macintosh computer and Photoshop.
I have always wanted to create and have been fascinated by cinema and cartoons, which are my biggest inspirations. I have been working in the industry for almost 10 years now. In the past few years I have been freelancing with companies in Paris, Tel-Aviv, Los Angeles, New York and Shanghai. I'm usually working as a visual development artist, compositor and art director, mainly for commercial and music industries.
This is Dor Shamir's final submission, which was judged by industry pros to win him the Golden Ticket for the Trojan Horse was a Unicorn festival in September
How did you feel when it was announced that you'd won the Golden Ticket?
It's amazing! It was great news to wake up to and I'm really thankful for the jury's decision. I'm looking forward to meeting all of the amazing artists and masters taking part in the festival.
"I've been admiring their work for many years now. Each one of them has their own unique style and speciality!"
What are you most looking forward to about the THU event in September? Who on the panel of artists are the biggest heroes for you?
It's cheesy, but basically all of them. I've been admiring their work for many years now. Each one of them has their own unique style and speciality!
What do you hope to gain from visiting the event?
I'm looking forward to meeting all of the amazing artists and creators that are going to be in the festival. I hope to get to network, exchange knowledge and experiences, and get to know new and inspiring people for future cooperation. And, well, I'm also really looking forward to seeing these amazing beaches everybody has been talking about!
I want to thank everybody again for supporting my work and to congratulate the other winners and participants - everybody did a great job!
Views like this make a nice change from the industrial wastelands you'd usually see from hotels at similar conferences!
