3dtotal: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?
Yilu Hao: Hello everyone, my name is Yilu Hao. You can call me kiteve. I am a 3D artist from China. I now work in Dragon Dreams. Dragon Dreams is an elite international animation film company, has an Oscar-winning creative team and is the oldest CG production team in China. I create assets for our animated films and really enjoy the work.
3dt: Tell us the story behind your recent gallery entry: What inspired you to create it?
YH: The original idea for Open It was a spoof movie called Meet the Spartans. In this film, there is a woman wearing a giant chastity belt with 'marry me' written on her. This idea was curious, so I bought some books about European costume culture after watching the movie. The book describes the origin and development of the medieval chastity belt. After I read about the cultural background of the chastity belt, I think it is very surprising. The chastity belt as one of the typical representatives of the dark ages, but the picture of it is seldom recorded. There are a few in some oil paintings, so I decided to create an interesting story about it. I was satisfied with the final result for Open It, as it is interesting and imaginative.
3dt: What software did you use and do you have any tips for using this software, or any other software that you use to create your art in general?
YH: In my daily work I mainly use Maya, which I also used to create Open It. The rest of the work is done with 3ds Max. I think Maya is very good for a studio's team production, because it has a very clear classification. 3ds Max is more suitable for the artistic creation of the individual, because it has more freedom. So I like to use 3ds Max to create personal works.
3dt: Would you consider yourself to have a particular signature style, or techniques that you use often?
YH: I don't have a specific style, because I like to try different style very much. Realism and cartoon is my favorite.
3dt: What software would you like to learn in the future to expand your portfolio and skillset, and why?
YH: I've been studying Arnold Renderer. Arnold is a very powerful renderer. The company's next project is with a Spanish animation film, which needs rendering with Arnold. I've always wanted to learn to use Arnold, but always had no time to study. This project has provided me a chance to study it, so I am really looking forward to it.
3dt: How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?
YH: Make a plan every day, stick it on the display. I write some words to myself, like this; You must finish this hand today, if you don't do this you will step on dog poop.'
3dt: What can we expect to see from you next?
YH: Next, I'd like to do some images of fierce fighting. I like the Monster Hunter game very much. I want to try to do something like this a fight scene representing the story. I'd like to achieve the atmosphere of the performance of battle as much as possible. Of course, I also want to try to make unique details, and render it with Arnold.
3dt: If you could choose any superhero power, what would you take?
YH: I will choose teleportation, because then I can travel everywhere. I will never have to worry about being late for work.
