The GPU giant's cloud-based graphics acceleration technology is now available
across the UK
Cloud-based GPU technology is surely the future of the CG industry, but it involves large outlays, and you may have concerns about its usefulness if you're on a slow internet connection. To alleviate these worries, NVIDIA has unveiled its GRID Test Drive program for the UK market, which allows users to see the power of cloud computing without spending a penny.
The program – which is also available in China, Taiwan and North America – gives you access to a virtual machine with 8CPU processing cores, 15GB of RAM and a dedicated NVIDIA GRID GPU. To demonstrate its power it includes a range of programs, from an HTML 5 web demo to a complex Autodesk AutoCAD model. Bespoke NVIDIA applications which show facial animation and an environment rendering are also included.
The benefit of the system, though, is that you can install just about any application on the virtual machine (VM). NVIDIA boasts that you can install Adobe's Creative Cloud
and access GPU accelerated features in Photoshop, Premiere Pro and After Effects. NVIDIA also promises that the GPU acceleration is better than that found in Amazon's competing Workspaces system
, with high-quality blended transparency and less choppiness.
At the time of writing, GRID software is only available for Windows, but OS X and Linux versions are slated to be released soon. If you'd like to try it for yourself, visit www.nvidia.com/trygrid.html to begin your free trial.
