3dt: Your characters tend to be quite dark, would you consider creating more light-hearted designs or is this a signature style?

AF: To be honest, it hasn't been a conscious decision to make 'dark' characters, but I guess those are the kinds of characters I find most interesting. I wouldn't consider it a signature style, but they are the characters that I enjoy creating at the moment. Although my next couple of personal projects are probably going to fall into the 'dark' category, I would definitely be open to working on something more light-hearted. Personal projects tend to take a while to complete because you're only working on them when you have spare time, so it needs to be a subject matter that you're passionate about. If I had the right concept or idea for a more light-hearted character, then I would absolutely like to do that in the future.

3dt: As a freelancer, what would be your dream character project?

AF: I'd love to be able to work on an iconic main character and be able to have some creative input. Characters like Nathan Drake from the Uncharted series or Commander Shepard from Mass Effect immediately come to mind. It would be great to able to work on a main character for a game with great art style and direction like Dishonored or Bioshock Infinite. There's so many game projects that I would love to be a part of and hopefully one day I will be.

3dt: You mentioned that you find it useful to post your work on forums for feedback. How do you deal with negative reactions?
AF: I've been pretty lucky in that I haven't really had much negativity towards my work, but I think learning how to deal with critiques is important. When you're putting your work out there for people to see and comment on, you need to develop a thick skin and also keep in mind that you can't please everyone. Everyone has different artistic tastes and different opinions, and sometimes you just need to choose which opinions you should listen to.

When people offer constructive feedback, most of the time they are doing it to help improve your work, so it shouldn't be taken as a personal attack. I see a lot of newer artists, who aren't used to feedback, get easily offended when someone suggests an area that they need to improve. I try to keep an open mind when getting feedback on forums, sometimes people can offer different ideas that you hadn't even thought of.

3dt: What is it that drew you to and continues to inspire you about creating character concepts?
AF: I really enjoy the process of bringing a character to life. I like the challenge of trying to capture a character's personality through gesture, posing and expression. Sculpting is my favorite phase in the character creation pipeline because of the freedom of being able to create anything. Particularly with some of the newer tools, like DynaMesh in ZBrush, it makes it even easier to just start sculpting and not have to worry about any of the technical limitations.

3dt: As a character modeler, how do you deal with anatomy? Have you studied anatomy? Do you use resources or does it come naturally to you?
AF: Anatomy is one of those subjects where the more you learn, the more you realize you don't know. For me studying anatomy is an ongoing process, it's an area I'm always trying to improve on. I have quite a few resources that I use for reference when I need it. I have several anatomy books and folders of reference images that I use particularly when I'm sculpting more realistic characters. I like to use them as a way to check proportions, muscle flow and position and to make sure everything is looking correct.

3dt: Would you ever consider branching out and working on other areas of 3D design?
AF: At the moment I'm also doing some 3D vehicle creation and in the past I've had some experience doing some effects and animation, but my passion is definitely in character art. In the future I may look at other areas, but for now I want to pursue my passion, continue to improve my skills and see where it takes me.

What do you like to do when you're not working or creating personal projects? Do your personal interests ever influence your work?

There are lots of things I like to do when I'm not working, but the ones that influence my personal work the most are playing videogames, watching movies, TV shows and reading. Games like Mass Effect have had a big impact on my work; the armor design of a couple of my characters have been heavily influenced by those in Mass Effect and my Pendleton sculpt was done because I enjoyed the Dishonored game so much, so my interests definitely influence my personal work. Having these interests also helps me stay motivated and inspired to keep creating personal work.
