Daniele's image, Spiderbaby, arrived in our gallery on the 18 February. With over 4,000 views, it currently stands at 4 and a half stars. We chat to its creator, Daniele Frau...

3dtotal staff: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Daniele Frau: Hello! I'm Daniele Frau, I'm 26 years old and I live in Cagliari (Italy).

Since childhood I've loved PC games, observing their graphical details and seeing all the intro videos. I studied informatics at high school, and in July 2013 I took the IED diploma in product design.

This school helped me to believe in me, in my dreams and in my passions; to take inspiration from everything I see and, especially, to acquire a project's methodology to work better.

During my time here I have collaborated with one of my teachers, Alessandro Cortes, which helped me to improve my graphic design, to make storyboards and especially helped me learn how to treat the details in every project, as well as the simpler aspects.

I've worked to create short 3D commercials, but now I'm studying to learn as much as possible, with the dream to work in a team with others 3D artists. I'd like to collaborate with them. I think it's the only way to grow up professionally.

At the moment I'm studying 'squash and stretch' with an online Italian animation school. I've learned most things by myself up to now, but there are some things that I need someone to explain to me.

3dt: Tell us the story behind your artwork: What brought you into the digital art world and what software do you use?

DF: During 3 years at the European Institute of Design, I started self-learn 3ds Max to make in 3D all the projects that I was designing for the school.

I start the school with a strong car design passion, but this has evolved into a passion for everything to do with 3D graphics, and I started to create the first cars, 3D characters and animations.

Step by step, I found that I loved not only modeling but all the processes that go into creating a 3D model. To make characters, I like the modeling, texturing, rigging and animation stages; only the rendering stage is not my favorite.

3dt: How did you learn to paint digitally?

DF: I'm not very good at painting digitally, I like to use a sketchbook only to make my sketch concepts. But there are many people greater than me.

3dt: Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

DF: There are many artists that I follow, one of these is Warner McGee; I especially love his 'SHEro' character – the form of the eyes, the position of the mouth and the nose, the eye size, all the little details that make a simple character a great character. There are many 3D artists, but few are those that know how to treat the details.

These professionals inspire me to make my work ever better; to improve every time.

3dt: What software would you like to learn in the future to expand your portfolio and skillset, and why?

DF: I would like to improve with Maya, especially for modeling. I think is the software used more for the movies and I will need to know this tool better.

At the same time I would like to know the world of Unity to implement my model into a game engine.

3dt: How do you like to unwind after a hard day's (or night's) work?

DF: Fortunately, or unfortunately, my work coincides with my greatest passion, and during breaks, I can assure you that there are few, I like to ride my bicycle, distract myself with my friends and being with my girlfriend.

3dt: If you could choose any superhero power, what would you take?

DF: I think that the speed power of Flash would be amazing. I would make everything I do now but in less time.

Let's say that I'd settle for a little more patience...
