3dtotal: What are the key things that a great portfolio must have?

Dan: For each discipline it's different. If you are looking to be a character artist then showing a strong sense of anatomy through sculpting is key. The ability to show how you can work on different styles such as realistic and stylized is also hugely beneficial. I look for at least a female and male sculpture for character artist portfolios and the ability to texture and build clean geo as well. Quality over quantity.

3dtotal: Where would you like to be in 5 years' time?

Dan: Right now I'm enjoying working in games but I would eventually like to maybe work on some film projects as well. There is also so much I want to do, such as create a short animated film, children's story books as well as some more small personal projects. Right now it's just tough finding the time to fit it all in! I'd love to also start settling down a bit and raising a family. My goals are always to live, love and laugh.

3dtotal: Looking back with the benefit of your experience, are there are things you wish you had done differently, in terms of your career?

Dan: I consider myself extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to work on some amazing projects at some amazing studios. I don't regret any of my career choices as it has been a great ride so far. I do wish that I would have maybe worked on some film projects in the past as I'm a huge movie guy. That being said; never say never. Right now I'm having a blast!

3dtotal: If you could give one piece of advice to people looking to break into the industry, what would it be?

Dan: It's an extremely competitive industry right now with more and more students graduating every day. In order to make a big impact and land your first job you have to work smarter and harder than everyone else. If you love what you do it will never really seem like work. Don't be afraid of critiques and others' opinions and have a thick skin. Learn everything you can, be nice to people and have a great and strong portfolio. Having contacts and strong relationships is also super important. Now go get it!
