3dtotal: What were your childhood inspirations and earliest artistic memory?

Matt: My parents had an artistic encyclopedia which covered everything from the prehistoric age to the contemporary period. There were 20 volumes of illustrations, sculptures and paintings in total, and I used to look at them when I was bored on a Wednesday afternoon.

My earliest artistic memory was when I was 12 and won a painting competition. We had to paint an ugly picture of an ugly clown based on works from the French painter Jean Dubuffet.

3dtotal: What training have you had (if any)?

Matt: I completed 1 ½ years in the Art Appliqué Duperré and 5 in the École Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs de Paris. I didn't graduate in these schools though.

2D work created as a student

3dtotal: Are there any particular schools or courses that you'd recommend?

Matt: Yes – the ENSAD in Paris. You can learn a large variety of artistic techniques here – I had lessons in 3D here, but learning 3D was very complex at the time.

3dtotal: What was your first job in the industry and how did you get it?

Matt: My first job was an illustration project for a car magazine called Nitro. I created a full-color page, using a color ink technique. I did this during the last year at the ENSAD, as a result of looking for a job to have more money in my student life. From there, I started to work as a freelancer.
