Notes:
The intention was to do an exterior environment, so I could do a lot of lighting study, such as light temperature and organic materials.
With that in mind I decided to reproduce a scene of a portuguese beach.

Everything`s look great except that weird water surface. Hard to understand what's going on there - wave, or some kind of tide or an alien creature swimming underneath? I think that weird water surface ruined the entire image.

I guess that is the difference between some 3D artists and myself :pThe term "finished working" on a project doesn't exist if a problem exists in the image, but I can spend months/years on a project before I call it finished.Hope to see more work from you soon

Bubbaloo, Silok, inveni0Thank you for your comment! So, I used de reflexion map to be able to control where I wanted the water or the 'wet sand' to be and also to control the details and imperfection... Abou the bump and normal map... I noticed that the details when I used them together were better than the bump map alone.simon-3dtthanks for the comment and for the plug. ;DKage, hulahugathanks a lot for the tips, but I've already finished working with that picture, but I'm sure to use your advices for my futures projects!Tempest1295, starpainters, dopefish, chris_soloThank you for your comments! I_AM_DAVE_COXSure! Glad you like my job! ;D

Really nice render, but the boat could do with a bit more weathering and oddities in the texture :).Agreeing with Kage's extremely helpful crit as well...

The environment looks really realistic, but, the boat (foreground), pier and buildings which act as a back focal point look very low in detail which gives the image a definite rendered look. The lens flares don't boost the image either.I think the pier and buildings look off due to some lighting inconsistency (something odd about that building with the flares) But the boats textures don't look high resolution enough so that gives the boat a low poly look, even though from the wire-frame, I can see its not. *EDIT* - After looking at it some more, it seems to be that the boats bump map is too big (i.e too small of a resolution), so the bumps look far too big, giving it that over done look)If you increased the texture on the boat, and messed with the lighting, and added some detail on the pier, especially that building with the lens flares, I think it'll be a much stronger image.Saying that though, the environment (water, beach) looks terrific, so well done on that :)Its just a shame the other parts lack which lowers the image quality down overall.*EDIT 2* - Something else I noticed is that you can see that the background is in 100% focus, yet the sand in front of the boat is less in focus. This would suggest that you are using a lower f-stop value, but if that was the case, the background, especially the pier would also be out of focus. The background suggests however that you are using a very high f-stop value, so the foreground should also be 100% in focus
Shouldn't the water be consistently reflective? Why use a reflection map?
If you look at the final render, you'll see that he used the reflection map to keep from having to model every imperfection in the water's surface.

Good scene and realistic render. Not sure why you use a the same bump as the normal map for the sand tough. there is some line in the water who are strange too.

Nice work! Only some of the water reflection looks strange. Shouldn't the water be consistently reflective? Why use a reflection map?Can you tell me how you use bump and normal map? Aren't they the same effect?
