Notes:
Originally a shot I did for a Fable 2 cinematic at Blur Studio.
I liked the subject of a quiet winter scene at sunset, so I wanted to go a little bit further by adding some more details and atmosphere.

Rendered in Mental Ray, sky made with Terragen 2, foreground trees are from Xfrog, other ones are from TreeStorm (mostly opacity maps), birds from a photograph and re-arranged for composition.

Thanks a lot for all of these comments !If you think it looks like a painting, that's the best compliment for me !Anyway, I don't want to take credit for everything in this image : Since it was originally a commercial project, I started with a concept design from Chuck Wojtkiewicz, concept artist at Blur :http://oli.vernay.free.fr/images/gallerie/FarmlandsConcept.jpg

The wire is overwhelming.... that's a job for a patient guy!I really like the way you put all things together, and in despite of this is mainly geometry, it looks like a painting... awesome job Bahko. And I really like the palette. It's freezing but the warm tones of the sun lighting bring the scene to life!

@ Moises Gomes :Thanks man !@ timonza-kunThanks for your critique !I agree, I should have spent more time on the snow modeling, it's actually one mesh with a mask to separate mud and snow (well, it's a little bit more complicated but basically that's it).Maybe a better way would be to model the ground, scatter some vegetation, add a snow layer on top of everything in separate meshes, then work on the snow-ground integration.

what a detailed work! however it seems (am i the only one who sees that?) a li'l bit unnatural how the fence is covered with snow, and the road, too. all the rest of the picture realy looks like a winter fairytale. smt like that i saw in my childhood 'cause i lived in a village =)

Thanks Nupsi !Yeah it was using a lot of virtual memory, but at least there was no displacement, only a few maps (some procedural, not many) and basic shaders. It's getting hard now with 4GB, I'll upgrade the ram for future projects.

Nupsi (Forums) on Tue, 13 April 2010 8:40am
Such a beautiful scene and a impressive work! Unbelievable that 4 gig of ram were enough for a heavy scene like that  I suppose you did use a lot of procedural maps, do you?Oh...and welcome to the forums ;)
Very impressive snow and love that lighting, very good indeed. There's a hell of alot of geometry in that scene, must have a very good computer or it'd grind to a halt :)
Thanks !Yeah I have to admit, the mesh is not highly optimized :o But except for the foreground, the whole scene is not that heavy, and wasn't so long to render (I'm using a standard quad core and 4GB of ram).
