The Stairs

Okay, lets get on with creating the stairs. Switch to Layer 4, which should now be empty, and activate the Box Tool. Bring up the Numeric Panel and use the following settings.

Close down the Numeric Panel and hit Space to create the box, then activate the Box Tool again, bring up the Numeric Panel and use the following settings.

Z 0 Z 330mm Z 1

Close down the Numeric Panel and hit Space to create the box. Activate the Clone Tool by hitting "ctrl+C", and then use the following settings in the Panel that comes up.

Number of Clones: 15

Offset
X: 0
Y: 176mm
Z: 280mm

Keep the rest to the default settings and click OK. We now have enough steps to reach the second floor. The stairs is not in the right position yet, but we'll fix that later on. Switch to Points Mode, then working in Top View, drag a lasso around all the points on the left side, like in picture 38.

Copy these points, then switch to Layer 5 and paste them there. There should only be points in Layer 5 now, no polygons.

Activate the Set Value Tool by hitting "ctrl+v", set the axis to X and the Value to 0, then click OK. Copy these points, then switch to Layer 6 and paste them there. Use the Set Value Tool again, but this time set the axis to Y and the Value to 0, then click OK. Merge the points and 95 points should be eliminated. Cut the points out of Layer 6 and paste them back in Layer 5.

Now size up the Side View (Viewport 4), and while holding the mouse pointer over Viewport 4, hit "ctrl+a" to fit the points in the view. Layer 5 should now look something like picture 39.

We are going to create a polygon out the points we have here, that will be the sides of the stairs later on, but we don't need all of the points.

Start in the lower right corner in the Side View and select the point there, then, moving clockwise, select the points shown in picture 40. This might take some time, and be sure to select the same points that I have selected.

The total amount of points that should be selected if you did this right is 49. Hit "p" to create a polygon out of these points, then bring up the Points Statistics Panel by hitting "w" and click the + next to "0 polygons". 112 points should be selected, and we just need to delete these so do that now. Activate the Move Tool and bring up the Numeric Panel, then use the following settings.

Hit apply and the polygon should move a bit.

Keep the Side View sized up and stay in Points Mode, then drag a lasso around all the points that make up the bottom of this polygon, like in picture 41.

Activate the Set Value Tool and set the axis to Y, the value to 0 and then click OK.

Open up the Change Surface Panel and apply the "Walls_Wood" surface to this polygon. Switch back to Layer 4 and give the stair steps the "Walls_Wood" surface as well.

Go back to Layer 5 and activate the Move Tool, then use the following settings in the Numeric Panel.

Click Apply and the polygon should move. Activate the Mirror Tool and bring up the Numeric Panel, set the axis to X and keep the centre values at 0, then close down the Numeric Panel and hit Space.

Drag a lasso around both polygons to select them, and then bevel them 10 times using the following values, one at a time.

When you have bevelled them, keep the polygons selected and bring up the Change Surface Panel, set the surface to "Default" and click OK. This will make it easier to select those two polygons later on when we need them. Deselect everything and activate the Move Tool, then bring up the Numeric Panel and use the following settings.

Click Apply to perform the move, then switch to Layer 4 and move it with the same values, -2m on the Z-axis. Switch to Layer 6 and put Layer 5 in the background. Size up the Side View if it isn't already and fit the content in the Side View by holding the mouse pointer over the View and pressing "ctrl+a". Working in Side View, activate the Pen Tool and create a 3 point polygon in clockwise order, like the one in picture 42. Don't worry if the polygon is nice looking, we will correct it later on.

Now we need to position these 3 points one by one. Keep the Side View sized up, and switch to Point Mode if you haven't already. Deselect everything, then select the point to the very left in this triangle shaped polygon and hit "i" to bring up the Point Info panel.

This Panel tells you the exact information on where this point is located at the very moment, but we need to change it to our own values. In the List to the left, click on the "Position" string to highlight it, then click the "Edit" button to the left. Change the values in the Panel that comes up with the following settings.

Click OK, and then click OK again to perform the movement of this point. Deselect this point and select the bottom right point in the Side View, then bring up the Point Info Panel again and use the following values.

Z 2,3m

Click OK, and then OK again to perform the movement of this point. Now select the last point in the triangle shaped polygon (the upper-right one), and use the following values in the Point Info Panel.

Y 2,4m
Z 2,3m

Click OK, and then OK again to perform the movement, and then deselect everything. You can size down the Side View now until all four Views are the same size. Activate the Extrude Tool in the Multiply Tab and bring up the Numeric Panel. Use the following settings.

Extent X: -3m
Extent Y: 0
Extent Z: 0
Sides: 1

Close down the Numeric Panel and hit Space to perform the extrusion. Activate the Move Tool and use the following settings in the Numeric Panel.

Y 0
Z 0

Click Apply to move the object. Switch to Layer 5 and put Layer 6 in the background, and then perform a Slice Operation using the Solid Drill Tool. The Sides of the Stairs should now be cut with a triangle shape in the middle, and you can delete the extruded triangle in Layer 6 now, we don't need it anymore.

Switch to Layer 5 when you are done, then switch to Polygon Mode.

Bring up the Polygon Statistics Panel by hitting "w", then select the "Default" Surface and click the + to select them, then close down the Statistics Panel. The first thing we will do with these polygons selected is to change the surface, so bring up the Change Surface Panel and set the surface to "Walls_Wood".

The amount of polygons selected now should be 4, and we need to deselect 2 of these before we continue. In the Side View, use your mouse and click once on the outer polygons to deselect these, leaving only the sliced triangle selected. Have a look at picture 43 to see if you got it right.

With these 2 polygons selected, activate the Bevel Tool and bring up the Numeric Panel, then use the following settings.

After the Bevels are done, keep the polygons selected and activate the Knife Tool, then use the following values in the Numeric Panel.

Close down the Numeric Panel and hit Space to perform the cut, then activate the Knife Tool again, and use the following values in the Numeric Panel.

Close down the Numeric Panel and hit Space to perform the cut.

Keep the Polygons selected and perform 10 bevels on them, one by one using the following settings.

That's it for the sides of the stairs, next we will add some details to the stair-steps that we have in Layer 4. We will use the Knife Tool to cut these stair-steps that will later become a red carpet.

Switch to Layer 4 and activate the Bevel Tool, then use the following settings in the Numeric Panel.

Activate the Knife Tool and bring up the Numeric Panel, then use the following settings.

Close down the Numeric Panel and hit Space to perform the cut. Activate the Knife Tool again and use the following settings in the Numeric Panel.

Close down the Numeric Panel and hit Space to perform the cut. Working in Back View, drag a lasso around the middle segment of polygons, between the two cuts we just made, like in picture 44.

Bring up the Change Surface Panel and create a new surface called "Carpet_Gold". Give it a yellow colour (R: 240 G: 200 B: 60). Set the specular to 100%, activate Smoothing and click OK. Keep the polygons selected and activate the Bevel Tool, then use the following settings in the Numeric Panel.

After the bevel is done keep the polygons selected and bring up the Change Surface Panel. Create a new surface called "Carpet_Red" and give it a red colour (R: 255 G: 0 B: 0). Set the specular to 0% and turn off Smoothing. Click OK and the surface should apply to the selected polygons.

Now you can deselect everything, and if you view Layer 4 and 5 together, they should now look something like picture 45.

Switch to Layer 5 and cut the sides of the stairs out with "x", then paste them in Layer 4 together with the rest of the stairs object. Hit "s" to save the progress we've made so far.
